My husband and I love the Kona Cafe'. It's our tradition to eat there the first night of our trip followed by a Pina Colada on the beach to watch Wishes!
The decor of Kona is very appealing and could be considered kind of romantic if it wasn't so darn busy. It can get 'Chef Mickey' wild in there.
We've had dinner there 4 times and breakfast twice. (and we've never stayed at the Poly) I have to admit that I always get the same thing for dinner each time I go but it has never failed to please me. I have the Coconut Almond Chicken - sauteed chicken breast served with Asian greens tossed with honey-lime dressing, golden pineapple, strawberries, and toasted almonds. I could go for that almost every night of my trip. My husband has had a couple of differnt things from the NY strip to the Prime Rib to some kind of pasta. He's enjoyed it all but loves the strip the best. We've tried the desserts on several occasions but usally we opt for a frozen beverage out on the beach.
Breakfast is really good and unique. Many people rave about the Tonga Toast and I had the opportunity to try the Toast and the Macadamia Pineapple Pancakes. The pancakes are outstanding! The Tonga Toast is too sweet and I really have a sweet tooth. Both items come with a choice of sausage or ham. I also have found that breakfast hasn't been insanely busy as dinner.
So I give it several thumbs up for dinner and breakfast.

Have been here twice for breakfast. Both times the food was excellent. We had the Tonga toast, and the Samoan (which is like eggs benedict, with pulled pork instead of ham/bacon)
The last time we went with our kids and booked at 10:30 ADR to have more of a brunch. It took 30-40 min to get our order. I'm guessing that they were transitioning to their lunch menu and had to make everything from scratch. But my kids only ordered pancakes so I'm not sure why it would take that long.
The Kona Coffee is awesome though, and I'd go back here in a heartbeat.

Love the pressed pot Kona coffee. We try to have breakfast here on each trip. I know a lot of people love the Tonga Toast but I have never tried it as it looks like it would be to much food for me (but looks outstanding!!) My husband always gets the Big Kahuna as he loves a big breakfast!!!
A couple of weeks ago we stopped at the Kona Sushi Bar and had the Volcano Roll and have been craving it ever since!!! We already have an ADR for July for dinner as we are told you can order sushi from the Kona dinner menu. The bar tables at the Kona Sushi Bar are open seating as they do not take ADRs but you can order from the Kona dinner menu from there.

We stumbled into Kona Cafe one morning for a breakfast on the last trip and were thrilled with the food. In fact, we ended up leaving Hollywood Studios in the early evening when it started to pour and headed over to Kona for a dinner. We were able to walk in without and ADR's. Worth checking out, especially when everything else seems booked up.

Recently on my first solo trip to Disney I made a lunch reservation for Kona Cafe. When I arrived, I was immediately seated at a table for four and provided with all necessary menus. I felt a little strange at the 4 top table, but since it was around the time the restaurant opened it was not very busy. My waiter was very attentive and was quick with drink refills. I had the Polynesian Plate Lunch with steak, and it was very tasty and more than enough for one person. I particularly enjoyed the terriaki glaze with pineapple salsa. There was too much food for dessert so I just had the entree. I want to say that I was very nervous to be dining alone this time, and although my experience at other places was fine, my solo experience at Kona was wonderful! I never felt as though I was alone and was able to entertain myself by observing the people around me and those walking around the 2nd floor of the Poly. If you are a people watching person and are dining in Disney I highly suggest Kona.

A meal here always feels like a lovely respite. The breakfasts are fabulous and feature tropical touches like macadamia butter and pineapple pancakes, not to mention Tonga Toast. The Kona coffee is among one of the few really great coffee experiences available at Disney. Dinner here is a relaxed experience of excellent quality. The loaf of slightly sweet bread and macadamia butter that accompany dinner are a lovely touch. Fish and steaks as well as noodles and salads are all well prepared.

We have often eaten here before or after a day in MK and never seem to have trouble with a last minute ADR. I prefer breakfast with the Tonga Toast and Kona press pot. Asian inspired dinner is great. Desserts are usually very scrumptious and on display. DH likes the steak. Dinner pricing seems a bit high.

My husband and I loved the food at this restaurant. We both had the teriyaki steak. We found it flavorful and tender. The bread with macadamia nut butter was warm and sweet. Our server was nice but not overbearing, bringing full Cokes as quick as my husband could drink them. For dessert we had the creme brulee (my husbands new favorite) and the apple stack. There was a lot of noise from the common areas of the resort and the restaurant was very busy while we were there. We plan on going back on future visits!

Finally tried the famed Tonga Toast - DH loved it but my taste of it was too sweet for me, as I expected. The mac nut pineapple pancakes were superb - packed full of nuts and lots of pineapple topping.

Our meal here turned out to be very nice. We didn't care for the fact that it was essentially open to the lobby area. There was a lot of noise from people waiting for their seats at nearby 'Ohana that detracted from the atmosphere.
The food was very good and the menu selections offer something for everybody.

We had dinner here in 9/2008. I had heard great things about the food. We had a reservation and were seated immediately upon arrival. We ordered an appetizer of wings which were good with a nice spicy mustard sauce on top. Our entrees were good as well, but were lukewarm when we got them. For dessert I had the banana creme brulee which was not cooked properly for creme brulee. The top was really thick, really burnt sugar that I had to take off in order to eat the custard and chocolate on the bottom. Our server was pretty much never to be found the whole time. I was convinced she was out back playing a card game or something. I found this odd because it's a small restaurant so she can't have that many tables. The restaurant is also open to the lobby and was very noisy with much of the noise coming from people waiting outside of Ohana and people coming in off of the monorail.

The Kona Cafe is my favorite table service restaurant on-site. The bread is to die for - or perhaps it is the butter that is to die for. I enjoy the atmosphere. It is a bit noisy, but it is very open, and I enjoy being able to look around the Polynesian. We like to feel relaxed and at ease while we are eating and the Kona Cafe is perfect for this.
We have eaten at the Kona Cafe both on and off the dining plan. When on the dining plan, we have always been encouraged to go for the most expensive item. Therefore, we've had steak at the Kona Cafe quite a few times. We have always been pleased. But what brings me back to this restaurant is the Almond Crusted Chicken Breast. YUM! My absolute favorite meal.
If it weren't for the food that we enjoy here, I would have to say that I would never return to this resturant, though, because of the SLOW service. We have canceled meals here before because we have just not wanted to take the time it is going to involve. I believe that we have always gotten the same server. While she is very, very nice and very, very accommodating, she has no concept of how to make the meal transition smoothly. On our last meal we told her we had someplace to be (we allowed 90 minutes for dinner). This did not hurry her along at all. We ended up leaving without dessert. This is not a one time happening either. Every time we are here, there is too much time involved between appetizers, menus, refills, entrees, desserts, check, etc.
But the food is great and well worth the trip to the Polynesian.

It took me a while to try this restaurant, I just couldn't bring myself to eat in a restaurant that was so open to passerbyers. Finally one day I took the plunge and man was I glad I did! The meal starts off with a tasty sweet bread (think Hawaiian bread) with a side of Macadamia nut honey butter. My wife and I split the Ahi and terriyaki NY stip, and they were delicious.
One thing that really sets this eatery apart from its WDW counterparts is its wide assortment of desserts. We thoroughly enjoyed this meal (so much so that we brought friends back to it a few weeks later).

We had lunch here during our Poly stay and it was delicious. We had the sticky wings as an appetizer – a MUST if you like wings. They’re really good. The girls (3 tweens) weren’t so crazy about the idea of the mustard drizzle and toasted sesame seeds (we didn’t think to ask them to leave it off) but the moment they ate the wings they realized it wasn’t that big of a deal (barely noticed it) and devoured the plate. I thought the mustard drizzle was actually a nice way to balance the sweetness of the glaze on the wings.
The girls had the standard Disney kids meals – and then proceeded to barely eat their lunches and eat ours once they tasted it! My mom and I had the Big Island Fish Tacos as we both love tilapia. It was excellent. The fish was very well seasoned. I had the toppings on the side and found all I needed was the tomato salsa. The shell is a sort of deep fried bread, too tasty. I managed to eat one and the girls shared my 2nd taco and my mom’s too!
We have some allergies (nuts, chocolate) amongst the girls and the chef came out and offered to make special sundaes to go for each of the girls. They came topped with cotton candy! They were SOLD on Kona from this point on.
Another great resort meal and a top pick for lunch if you’re in the MK area.

We always eat here the second night of our vacation.
It was as good as we remembered.
We had the same server as 4.5 years ago- she has been there since Kona opened and is very good!
DH and I began with the crabcake apps- always yummy!
I had the pomegranate BBQ pork chop which was tender and delectable. The Greens were amazing- in fact this is probably my favorite meal of all our meals including Signature dining because I actually got veggies and not just a "token" single veggie on my plate.
dH had the ribeye and raved over it!
The brocollini was excellent too!
The only letdown was the Kilhauae Torte, which was better the last time, more cake like with hotter chocolate lava. This time it was more cookie like, not as delectable.
Still- perhaps our best stand out meal at WDW!!!

We absolutely love Kona Cafe!! From the beautiful setting at the gorgeous Polynesian, to the awesome staff, to the incredible food, we just can't say enough.
The sweet bread with macadamia nut butter is worth going for just by itself. As for dinner, I had the shrimp & scallops, my hubby had the Tuna Oscar, our son had the NY Strip, and our daughter had a Disney kid meal and everything was outstanding. The desserts are probably the best I have ever tasted!
Can't wait to return in March 2010 and we already have our reservations for Kona!

This was the first time I ate here even though I stayed at this resort for 8 nights back in December. The food was absolutely wonderful. I went for the special they had where you pick one appetizer, one entre', and one dessert for a set price (I think it was $29.99). I had for my appetizer the duck dumplings, which were really good. For my entre' I had the coconut-almond chicken with a salad. The chicken was good but the star was the salad. It had lettuce, strawberrys and pineapple. For my dessert I chose the coconut creme tart. This was pretty good. I am not a huge sweet eater but this was good. All in all I will definitely eat here again.

My husband and I ate dinner here on May 13, 2010. We waited just a few minutes past our ADR time but took that time to explore the Poly as we've never stayed there. Our waitress was very nice and quickly took our drink orders and brought us the bread with macadamia nut butter. This wasn't as great as I had expected. I thought the tastes were very similar to the rolls at O'Charley's restaurant and a simple honey butter. Yummy, but not too out of the ordinary.
For our entrees I ordered the Tuna Oscar, mainly because of the fried green tomatoes. I don't care for sushi so I asked for it medium, as was suggested by our waitress. It also came with 3 spears of asparagus that were not good at all. They weren't cooked nearly long enough and were quite fibrous. The fried green tomatoes were wonderful as was the tuna. Very satisfied with the dish. Don't be deterred by the "wasabi hollandaise" as the sauce wasn't really spicy at all. My husband ordered the Shrimp and Scallops but substituted for all shrimp. This came with sticky rice and he enjoyed his dish very much.
I ordered the coconut cream kiki tart for dessert and it was great. It could have used a little more coconut flavor but I would definitely order it again. My DH ordered the banana chocolate creme brulee. He said it was the best he's ever had, minus the layer of chocolate at the bottom, which he wishes would have been left out.
Overall great experience. We would definitely return again!

Some say breakfast is breakfast...not so here! You get a Hawaiian coffee blend to drink and while you can opt for a more traditional breakfast, there is the Tonga Toast! It's big, it's sweet (not too sweet) and full of flavor with the cinnamon sugar, banana filling and strawberry sauce! You have got to try it!

I had to change a reservation for our arrival night at the last minute due to a timing issue. We were scheduled for Ohana, but I couldn''t get a later time about 4 days before our arrival. Looking over the limited choices we had (due to free dining at the time), the only one that looked reasonable was Kona Cafe. I though for sure it would be either a total letdown or standard at best. Man, was I wrong! This turned out to be the second best dinner we had, and the best breakfast when we ate there a second time in mid week. The service was great both time, maybe just a little slow, but nothing to complain about. We were seated promptly at our reservation time after checking in about 20 minutes early. Kona is an open air restaurant meaning that there are no walls between the cafe area and the upstairs lobby at the Polynesian, but we didn''t notice any outside noise as a distraction.
The food during our dinner was fantastic. The Almond Coconut chicken was the best meal I had all week we were there. My wife liked the steak very much, but felt it lacked a little on the seasoning in the description. However she did comment that it was a great steak, just not seasoned as heavily as she expected. My daughter is quite finicky about her shrimp, but raved about her plate here. Also we got some Potstickers to start, and even my wife and son ate them even though they usually do not like them.
We also had a reservation for breakfast, just because I wanted to try the Tonga Toast, and it did not disappoint. I am a very hearty breakfast eater, but that really filled me up. We paid out of pocket for the breakfast, but the prices were very good for the huge portions we were served.
I cannot say enough good about this restaurant, and for our next visit it will be at the top of the list. I will skip Ohana and just visit Kona again.

We have always enjoyed our dinners at Kona, but thsi last trip it seemed that the quality of food was slipping.
Our favorite appy is the crab cake, we have always loved it on our other trips.
But in earlu October they changed the recipe and frankly it was gross and we did not finish it.
When we commented to our server that we did not think our crabcakes were completely cooked, she told us that they had changed from the previous recipe (which was amazing!) to the new recipe and now the new recipe was much moister (think sloppy, goopy, nasty with little crab flavor).
We would never have ordered them if we had been told that the recipe had changed in the past 2 weeks.
If you are going to change recipes, please show that on the menu, as we think we are going to get the same great dish we always did, bait and switch. disappointing.
Other than that, our Kona dinner was sorta missing the flair it usually had.
Server did not bring sides requested with meal and had to request again.
Flavors of entrees were good, not excellent.
Hubby's rib eye steak was the least tasty rib eye he has ever had- how do you wreck a rib eye?
So that's why I'm giving Kona less of a rating- used to rate it almost equal to a Signature dinner, but now it's just an okay dinner.
Hey, maybe we were there on an off night...
so Kona is worth trying, you may have a better experience more like our first two dinners there.
Definitely much better than lots of other dinner spots but not as good as it used to be.

I had heard good things about this restaurant going into this meal. We did not wait long for a table once we got there (we had an ADR) and the service was great! I had the coconut almond chicken (the server recommended it) and it was one of the best meals I've ever had! The bread an butter was also really good! If you are looking for a meal in the MK area, GO HERE!

We visited WDW in the first week of March 2001 and was on the Deluxe Dining Plan so the price mentioned was if we were not on the dining plan. We didn't have reservations eventhough it was recommended but we got there for breakfast at 7:45 and was seated very quickly. The service was very nice and the food arrived hot and fast. We had no bad experience and the place is good for a fast breakfast before hitting the parks.
