Positive aspects of the product (pros): huge portions, good food, good value Cons: see review
Up until about a year ago, I would've rated Royal Street Veranda a "9" or even a "10". This place serves one main item (soup in a bread bowl), and (usually) serves it well.
You have a coice of 3 different soups: steak gumbo, vegetarian gumbo, or clam chowder. These are all served in a hollowed-out round loaf of sourdough bread. I've not tried the clam chowder as I'm a huge fan of gumbo (and New Orleans-style food in general!), but both the meat and veggie versions of the gumbo are quite good. Never been disappointed with them.
Now comes the "hit-or-miss" part: the bread bowl. If you're lucky, you'll get a fresh bread bowl. The tangy sourdough with the crusty outside and soft inside goes so well with the soup. However, the past couple of times I've eaten there, the bread bowls were...really, REALLY stale. As in, the outside was rock-hard and the inside was dry. I'm hoping that I just chose 2 "off days" to eat there, and that "stale" isn't the new norm.
Back to the positives: the portions are HUGE (big enough to share, so long as you don't mind eating out of the same bread bowl...or eating the same bread bowl!) & the prices are quite reasonable. About $9 for the bread bowl, soup, and crackers.

This is a great place for lunch. The chowder is awesome and is a must have for our family on every trip. The seating is limited but it is easy to take it to go. I would recommend this for a budget lunch.: Posted via eTicket

I stopped here for lunch and had a bread bowl of clam chowder and it was great! The price was very reasonable and the soup tasted great (not to mention the sourdough bread bowl)! The soup itself wasn't too thin but was full of potatoes and clam meat. I will definitely be eating here again!: Posted via eTicket

I honestly love this place! The bread bowls are DELICIOUS! You can ask for a sample ahead of time too if you want to try out the soup. Although there is not much seating I like to take mine down to the wall overlooking rivers of america or a bench near there. Love this place!
