Description: California Grill closed 2/2/2013- Late Summer 2013. The salon at the Contemporary will close effective 12/25/2012. Guests can use the Ship Shape Massage Salon and Fitness at Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club.
If you find the idea of staying in a resort that is within walking distance of the Magic Kingdom appealing, then the Contemporary Resort is for you! This massive A-frame tower with two Garden wings was one of the two original WDW resorts. http://www.wdwinfo.com/wdwinfo/resorts/contemp.htmKeywords: Contemporary Resort

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Walking distance to the Magic Kingdom, well appointed rooms Cons: Price can be on the high side if you're not able to secure a good deal
My first stay at the Contemporary a few years back was a nightmare. Service was awful, room was in a constant state of disrepair. On my last visit however, I found the service to be excellent and room in great condition. Very comfortable beds, tasteful 'contemporary' furniture and hop, skip and jump to the Magic Kingdom.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Location, Transporation Cons: Small
Had a fantastic Castle view room and watched the fireworks from our balcony. The room was small, but sufficient and was well appointed. The staff was excellent.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): An excellent Magic Kingdom View, great location, friendly Cast Members, terrific rooms Cons: None
In my opinion their Tower Magic Kingdom View is the best possible view in all of WDW, it's got an excellent overall location and their Cast Members have always been very friendly.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Walking distance to MK, monorail, castle view Cons: Cost, sinks in bathroom
CR is by far my family's favorite resort. You just can not beat the ease of access to MK. Getting to Epcot is super easy, too! We love the new look of the rooms. Love the spacious bathroom w/ the toilet separated. Not such a big fan of the sinks, though. Walking out of your tower room and seeing the monorail go by, looking down on Chef Mickey's...or laying in bed at night and watching Wishes...it's all just perfect!

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Location to the Magic Kingdom Cons: the most sterile of the Monorail resorts
The Contemporary Resort's best feature is its proximity to the Magic Kingdom - within easy walking distance! This is good, because I do not imagine this resort would be very successful were it not on the monorail. I am sure it was state of the art when built in the 70's, but now shows its age in terms of design and function.
Rooms here are well-appointed and have deluxe features, but it does have the feel of a convention hotel. We choose the Contemporary when the Poly or Grand Floridian are not available, or when they have a room rate offer too good to pass up.
Also, do yourself a favor and search "Snakes at the Contemporary" on the Disboards.....

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Walk to MK, monorail, size and aesthetics of room, excitement of concourse Cons: Utility of furnishings, underwhelming pool
I wrote an extended review at http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2148414
I also opined that the MK view is somewhat overrated at http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2159301
One thing I didn't mention in either place: the self-parking seems closer to the main main entrance than it does at other Deluxes where I've parked.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Recent update are beautiful; within walking distance of the Magic Kingdom and on the monorail for other attractions Cons: The far side of South Wing is quite a walk from the concourse
We loved our stay in the newly appointed rooms in the South Wing. The new computer system was a great touch, and the beds were very comfortable. We actually canceled the split hotel reservation elsewhere and booked more nights at the Contemporary.
Luxury comes with a price tag...but we found the convenience of the monorail and walking routes, along with the class and style, to be worth it.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): The monorail through the hotel Cons: The Price
We had a tower room with bay view. I love sitting on my balcony just relaxing a looking at the water. The rooms are decorated very beautifully. They are large and sleep 5. The bathroom is large and very nice. How incredible to have the monorail going through the hotel. And you can't beat the location. This is our favorite Disney resort.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Location, Large Room Size, History Cons: Pricey
This is one of Disney's best resorts. The location within walking distance to the Magic Kingdom is fabulous. If you get a room facing the park, you can also watch the fireworks at night from your balcony and they even pipe in the show music on the room TV. I also love watching the monorails as they glide around the Seven Seas Lagoon and into the structure.
The rooms are nice and large and the decor is great.
The restaurants are also fantastic and being on the monorail, you can dine at any of the other resorts in a matter of minutes.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): location, pool area Cons: theming
I have stayed here 3 times, all of which were during the refurbishment. At the time I stayed here the theming was a little "blah", but that may be different now. I love the location of the Contemporary. Transportation is so convenient from this point! I also enjoyed watching the fireworks from the obervation deck, and the Water Pagent from the beach. The water slide here is one of the best among the resorts, and the pool area is spacious.
Being along the monorail track also gives quick dining options. If we didn't have ADR's, we could choose counter service at all three monorail resorts, or shuttle over to WL on the ferry.
THe pool staff here was very helpful when my companion lost a pendant from her necklace. They immediately turned off the slide and helped us search for it. They even called in maintenance to check the hair trap. The next morning it was found by a little girl, and turned in immediately.
I consider myself fortunate to have had the opportunity to stay here 3 times. I know some have shown concern over the "noise" of the monorail traveling through, but as a guest you really don't hear it. I have stayed in a 4th floor room, right above the monorail, and was unable to hear it inside my room.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Location dining and takeing a brake from the parks Cons: littel
I have stayed their last year for the first time. Let me tell you this "you pay for what you get" at the Contemporary Resort. I had the lucky experiences of being up graded to the consigners level the staff is amazing they all went out of their way to make my nice fell e extra special.
I must say this hotel is perfect for a family of five for the room size and taking a break from the parks and at the end of the night with little ones the convinces of being one stop for the magic kingdom is a perfect ending to a magical experiences of Disney.
As far as mornings go it grate you are just a hop skip and a jump to all the parks. You are in waling distances to the Magic Kingdom the monorail is right their to take to the MK & ECOPT and the busses are right out side the hotel to take you to the “MGM”AKK Hollywood studios and Animal Kingdom.
I can’t wait till June come so that I can stay In the hart of Disney

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Monorail, MK walking distance Cons: $$ Price $$
We stay there every Christmas. Until this year the price has be moderate. This year we got wacked with the new pricing per day rates. We used to check in at value season and stay through New Years. This year the total hotel bill went up 50%. There has to be a better way to price it.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): great views, monorail access, lovely room decor Cons: see review.
We stayed concierge in 2007 which was flawless, great room and views and great concierge experience. We went back and stayed concierge again last Oct 08 and had a dreadful experience. Room not ready until after 5pm and when we walked in the bedding looked like it had been literally thrown on the beds, sheets hanging on the floor etc. Old, used soap in the sink and shower and the large standing lamp in the corner was broken, leaning on its side with a water stained lamp. We were very upset and informed the concierge desk person that we were not happy with the room. We were made to feel bad about speaking up and they tried to make off as if there was nothing wrong when it was blindingly obvious to them that it was. They eventually moved us to another room (after they told us there were no rooms available).Following this,we felt ignored by concierge staff the whole stay and it really put a damper on the whole experience so much so that I will NEVER EVER stay there again due to their attitude. The new room we were given was better however the bathroom was not clean and had 'splatter' around the bottom of the toilet and floor which I ended up just cleaning myself. Very dissapointing for a so called deluxe hotel in concierge!! That being said, the room decor is very nice and modern and the beds are lovely and comfortable. View is also great and you can't go past the monorail being so close. Just a pity they don't keep the rooms cleaned properly and have rude, unhelpful staff.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Location, beautiful rooms Cons:
I have always wanted to stay here since I was a kid, so when I finally got the chance I was thrilled. We had a garden room because I just couldn't justify paying a lot more money for a Tower room. The room itself was beautifully decorated - the bathroom was especially nice, even though the flat sinks were kind of annoying at times. We had a patio since we were on the first floor but never used it. I thought the beds were comfortable, but my husband complained that his back hurt after a few days. I think the mattress may have been too soft for him.
You cannot beat the Contemporary when it comes to location - just a quick walk to the Magic Kingdom. I loved being on the monorail and having easy access to the other resorts there. Bus service to DHS, AK and DTD was good, but it kind of annoyed me that we had to share a bus with the Poly. For what people pay to stay at these resorts, I don't think you should have to share.
What was also kind of strange was that there would be a lot of buses in the morning just dropping people off - I assume for the Chef Mickey's breakfast. Kind of annoying when you're waiting for a bus to take you to a theme park.
I thought the Contempo Cafe was good. They have a great chicken sandwich. Strange that they didn't post prices, though. We never used the pool. To me it didn't look like anything special.
For me the real drawback of this resort was I just missed the Disney theming. I missed walking around the resort feeling like I was somewhere else. If you're looking for that, the Contemporary is not the resort for you. But it's still a really nice resort and I would recommend it - especially if you plan to spend a lot of time at the MK.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Location Cons: Front desk staff
My wife and I made use of Disney’s “Buy Four, Get Three Free” promotion in order to spend seven nights in the Contemporary Resort for our first anniversary from 7/30-8/6. Having merely passed through the Contemporary in a state of awe previously, we were excited to have the chance to stay there ourselves.
Initially, we were thrilled to discover that our room was ready at the early hour of 7:45 am, and that represented the first and last time that we were happy about our resort. Unfortunately, we were unable to get into the room. We went back down to the front desk, and one of the cast members then came upstairs with us to determine what the problem was. He let us into the room with a master key and informed us that the door locks would have to be reprogrammed. We were advised to wait 15 minutes for someone to do so.
We waited for 30 minutes and decided that we wanted to head into the parks, and so we went downstairs again to advise the front desk of our situation. We told a different cast member about the locks needing to be reprogrammed and also advised him that we were missing a remote control for the television. With that, we hopped on a bus to Hollywood Studios.
Soaking wet from a torrential rainstorm, we returned to our room around 5:30 pm and were thwarted again by a malfunctioning door lock. We went back down to the front desk again, and they said that someone probably did reprogram the locks, but that we would need new key cards. New key cards in hand, we returned upstairs, and sure enough, the new cards didn’t work. So we went back downstairs yet again (knowing now that neither reprogramming nor remote control delivery had taken place), advising the front desk that they had had more than eight hours to fix the problem, and that we needed to get into our room soon. Finally, around 7:00 pm, a member of maintenance arrived and reprogrammed the lock, followed soon thereafter by a Mousekeeper with a T.V. remote. So the saga began…
The next morning on Friday, we found the message light was blinking on the telephone. In our attempts to retrieve the message, we discovered that although the phone could receive calls, there was no way to place outbound calls, including message retrieval. So, yet again, we went down to the front desk to advise them of our latest technical difficulty before leaving for the day. Needless to say, when we returned from the parks late that night, the phone was still not operational. It was not until Sunday around 3:00 that we again took the time to stop by the front desk to try to resolve the phone issue. Then, finally, someone came around 4:30 that day to make the necessary repairs.
The coup de grace came on Wednesday, our final night. We came back from dinner around 7:00, and we found the room to be uncomfortably hot. After 45 minutes of tinkering with the AC controls and waiting for the unit to engage, we realized that the AC was not working. Not wanting to remain in an oppressively hot room any longer than necessary, we decided to yet again tell the front desk in person about the problem. After notifying them of the problem, we decided to head to the lounge for an adult beverage. At 9:00, we decided to go back upstairs to see if, by some miracle, the problem had been addressed. Of course, no one had come to look at the AC. Instead, we had a message on the phone from the front desk, saying “We spoke with someone from Engineering about your AC, and they said that our records indicate that your room has a balcony. If you have the balcony door open, then the AC will not function properly. Please close the balcony door, and let us know if you have any additional problems.”
Allow me to translate: “We called over to the engineering department, and the schmuck-on-wheels who answered told us to give you the most generic, useless response we could devise. So we are hoping you will buy our line of crap and quit bothering us!”
Suffice it to say, we had to go back down to the front desk yet again. We spoke to another employee and, after having her argue about how the AC unit would not allow certain temperature settings and having her ask us, with a straight face, if we needed to have the AC fixed that night, she finally agreed to send somebody up. It was around 10:30 that we went upstairs again and found two maintenance men working to replace the entire AC duct work, a procedure that they said would require about 1 ½ to 2 hours.
At that point, we returned to the front desk and demanded to be given a different room for the night. Luckily, our request was obliged, or I would have been starring in a new “Don’t Taze Me, Bro!” video on Youtube.
It was the next day as we were obtaining our luggage from bell services for our departure on Magical Express that one of the bellhops asked if we enjoyed our stay. We told him the truth that we were extremely disappointed. He then went and got the attention of the Guest Services Manager. We then gave that manager a brief synopsis of our tragic stay. We made it a point to mention that it was not the problems themselves that made the stay so unpleasant, but rather the manner in which they were handled. Never once during our entire stay was a problem resolved after only one request.
Luckily, he was the first employee during the trip to apologize for the abysmal service that we were provided. He then offered to reimburse us for our final night’s stay, which did help to soften the blow.
In all fairness, I must make brief mention of those things that the Contemporary did well. One, Bell Services was always timely and highly professional. Two, the food service staff, shop staff and housekeeping all seemed to be very solid. Three, the beds were absurdly comfortable. Lastly, the Contemporary boasts a convenient location that no other resort on property can match, which made using WDW transportation during the trip an absolute breeze. Nonetheless, we felt that the resort was absolutely not worth the money we paid, even with the final night’s discount. Had we paid full rack rate, we might have considered pressing charges for highway robbery. Ultimately, we returned from our vacation feeling as stressed as if we had never gone and, therefore, will likely stay off property for the first time during our next Disney trip.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Convenience...service...views...disney magic...disney icon Cons: none
In my opinion this is the ultimate disney experience. We have stayed there several times...including this past April and have another trip booked for this December. This is disney magic at its finest from the monorail running through the hotel to the ultimate up-close view of the Magic Kingdom on one side and the beautiful lake and other parks in the distance on the other side. This place is dripping with disney magic.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): location, aesthetics Cons: price, Garden Wing too detached, CS options
My husband and I stayed here May 8-15, 2010. We stayed in the Garden Wing on the second floor. This was our first stay in a deluxe resort and it was great! The room decor was very nice and the bed was extrememly comfortable. Housekeeping did a great job too. My only regret is not springing for a room in the tower. I had requested a room on the ground floor close to the tower. We were given a room on the second floor almost as far away from the tower as you can get...oh well. The walk wasn't too bad but I did feel we were removed a little from all of the action. I would definitely stay here again though. The walk to MK was so nice and having the Monorail was cool. The Contempo Cafe wasn't all that impressive either though.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): chef mickeys/atmosphere/decor/monorail access Cons: No warm disney feel to the rooms
I can honestly say I've never stayed here but I have had relatives who have and I have seen the rooms. Like the name says it's very "contemporary". It's not somewhere you'd want to stay if u had kids, it's more geared towards young/older adults. However Chef Mickey's is located inside this resort and is a great place to meet Mickey and friends and enjoy a delicious buffet meal. The monorail also goes through this resort and you can pick it up quite easily to get to several locations such as magic kingdom and other deluxe resorts. This is a place you definitely must visit during your time at Disney!

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Great view, friendly staff, monorail Cons: None
My wife and I stayed February 4-10 and were amazed by this resort. We had a theme park view in the tower and there is nothing like looking out and seeing Cinderella's Castle lit up at night. The staff was very friendly and accommodating and the noise I hear so many complaining about was nonexistent. I would recommend this resort to everyone. Since our stay, we have determined we will never stay anywhere else. : Posted via eTicket

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Outstanding location, excellent service, good transportation, spacious rooms Cons: Atmosphere is a bit business-like, bathroom layout takes some getting used to.
Had an outstanding stay at the Contemporary with my family, Feb 21-26, 2011: me, my wife, and two sons (8 and 4). The amenities, room, and service were all equal to or better than most 4-star hotels I've stayed in (think premier Westin and Marriott properties, not 5-star hotels like Four Seasons).
Check-in: Very prompt and efficient. Bell service was very accommodating, allowing me to temporarily leave my rental car in the driveway for a few minutes while I dropped off the family in the room. Got our room requests fulfilled without a hitch.
Room: Very spacious, clean, and we liked the refined, modern design. Tower theme park view was just as advertised, and the balcony was roomy (it wasn't just a little ledge and a lawn chair). Overhead reading lights in bed were a nice touch, great when the kids were asleep. Would've liked more drawer space, but otherwise closet space was fine. The only real criticism here was the bathroom: while we liked the look of the sinks, the long shallow basins made it impossible for a 4-year-old to wash his hands, and their proximity to the bathtub made getting in and out of the shower very awkward. Practically no countertop space to keep toiletries. The showerhead needed a thorough descaling - a lot of mineral buildup made the shower somewhat wimpy.
Service: Really excellent - housekeeping was thorough (left us a towel animal on our first night!) and accommodated our requests to come at certain times. Used the laundry service- went very smoothly. Everyone, from the concierge desk to the store clerks, bell service to cafe cashiers, was pleasant and enthusiastic.
Atmosphere: Even during peak season, this was clearly a convention hotel. You might feel a little conspicuous wearing mouse ears in an elevator with conference attendees wearing business suits, but you'll get over it pretty quickly.
Bottom Line: Between the great service and rooms, as well as the convenient location and monorail access (and also pretty reliable bus service to DHS and AK), we'd definitely stay here again.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Large room. Very modern Cons: No Disney feel here
I stayed here for two nights during October 2011. We could walk to Mk so that was great for the Halloween party. It was faster walk than take the monorail. I ate at the food court it was ok. I would stay here again. The beds were comfortable. The pool was ok. I did not have my son with me so for an adult only trip this hotel was very good. I love the California Grill and have rated it as my second favorite place to eat at Disney so being close to it was a plus. I was in the park so did not see the fireworks from my room. If you don't mind the lack of a Disney feel and if you like modern then you should be happy here. The service was very good.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): AWESOME! Cons: none
Ok, so I'm biased, sorry. I've wanted to stay here since I was an itty bitty kid, riding the monorail through on our way to MK.
My hubby told me to book it for our 5 yr anniversary because he knew how much I wanted to stay here.
It was so cool to finally get to stay here! The decor isn't overly Mickey-ified, but it's still cool. The rooms are standard hotel size and layout, but it's the CONTEMPORARY! It's an icon!
Nothing beats being on the monorail and being able to walk over to MK. The fireworks viewing is spectacular. The food choices are all good, even Chef Mickey's.
We ended up buying into BLT because of how much we loved staying here. This is my favorite non-DVC place to stay.
The CM service is top notch. The boat rentals are fun. The pool and evening entertainment on the beach are tons of fun. Lots of extra things to do here. The shops and arcade are nice as well.
